Description of the book :
The idea of writing a book on these two ships may seem unusual at first glance. However, the perspective of the simultaneous commissioning, cutting-edge technological innovations and expression of the respective national symbol are at the center of this book. In addition, it is made up of mostly unpublished iconographies.

The first half is dedicated to the fate of the USS Enterprise CVN-65; the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in history, a true prototype of the atomic power of the American Navy today. It was commissioned for a span of 51 years that included service during the blockade of Cuba, in Vietnam, the Gulf War and in Iraq -  the cold war period that was not always cold.
The second part is dedicated to the famous transatlantic liner SS France. This ship was the symbol of post-war Gaullism and her country's ambassador to the waters of the globe until the fuel crisis.  She was decommissioned in 1974, marking the end of French transatlantic liners. She was sold a few years later to Norway and transformed into a cruise ship that sailed the Caribbean until 2003.

Benjamin Gross-Payot is at the end of his History course at the University of Fribourg. He is passionate about boats and ships. A navigator himself, he took an early interest in the maritime world. In 2018, he became collaborator and photographer for the Swiss navigation magazine "Dampferzeitung".
